North
Central Minnesota is filled with great places to hike. Pine River has one of the
best trails for families anywhere in the State. It runs right through town and
is called the Paul Bunyan Trail. The paved trail allows families with small children
to take a leisurely walk into the woods, over rivers and across meadows. Below
is a short list of area hiking trails.
Three
close-by hiking areas include the Upgaard Wildlife Management Area and the Veterans
Hiking Trail, both located along the Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway on Crow Wing County
Road 16. The Deep Portage Conservation Reserve, fifteen miles northeast of Pine
River and east of Hackensack, features 6,000 acres of trails and intrepetive sites
for all hikers and birdwatchers.
